Note that ESPN’s Marty Smith compared Brad Keselowski’s performance this weekend to Willis Freaking Reed.

I appreciate NASCAR as much as any urban-born, urban-raised, mostly-urban-dwelling citizen, but naming stock car racing the official sport of North Carolina is ridiculous.
The obvious choice is basketball, but why honor a sport with an even longer history in the state, one that anyone can play recreationally at any time, and that almost certainly contributes to more than the “20,000 jobs” the motorsports industry creates?

ESPN has a photo of Charlotte Motor Speedway’s new hi-def big screen going up. And yes, it’s monstrous, 30% larger than the big screen at Cowboys Stadium.
Having been to the 600 race (never again), all I want to know is: why? There’s no reason to put such a massive screen up at a speedway other than bragging rights.
