Ladies and gentlemen, it is with deep sadness that I inform you of an era coming to an end in San Francisco. The venerable Castro theatre at the end of this year will no longer regularly show films and many staffers were fired this week.

— NOOOOOOOOOOOO! One of the best theaters in the city, the Castro is no longer going to show movies. I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey on a 75mm print there. I saw The Godfather there. I saw Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars there. It’s a sad day for San Franciscans.

“Herb” Cain, Herb Caen

What’s been lost in this whole “Sarah Palin referred to Herman Cain as ‘Herb Cain’ (because she doesn’t care enough about other people to be bothered with such things as getting their names right)” is that there was a beloved San Francisco newspaper columnist named Herb Caen.

Deserves more play.

You don’t have a First Amendment right to cell phone service

Shutting down cell phone service is not a violation of your First Amendment rights, so stop saying it is. It might be an example of bad government eroding the citizenry’s faith that it will act in the populace’s best interest, but it most certainly is not prior restraint.

For those who think San Francisco is full of nothing but a bunch of liberal perverts, we say thank you and add another notch to our belt.

LA Times: SF considers pet-sales ban

For f—-’s sake… For every bit of awesomeness in my hometown, it seems like there’s a bit of lunacy that outsiders love to hold up. And no, that’s not an Onion headline.

Teal minivan. Bleached hair. Unholy color combination on the sweater. So gangsta.
In front of my parents’ house, circa 2003.

…it may be very difficult for the typical American to afford to relocate to the Bay Area or the DC-Baltimore area even though these are places where jobs are plentiful. Charlotte and Cleveland are both considerably smaller, so the high ratio of job opportunities to people represents a small total number of jobs, but moving to those cities is a much cheaper proposition.

Another photo from the weekend in San Francisco. The Fiancee was very amused when she spotted this restaurant in the Castro.
