Scar always struck me as an Ayn Randian who didn’t understand how much society actually did for him.

Titanic’s alternate ending. That this was actually written and filmed is insanity. Say what you will about the movie, but the ending they used is a million times better than this.
Via Gawker, which reveals an amazing bit of nerdistry in the Titanic re-release.

Had no idea James Dean was a founding member of Tom Henke’s Army.

Gawker’s right: this is way cooler than it has any right to be. “Hello” by Lionel Richie, spliced together entirely out of movie lines.

Rainman Suite posted a link to the new John Cena movie. Terrible premise, or The Worst premise?
Best comment from my buddy, Ben: “I keep thinking this isn’t real. It isn’t, is it?”

The Official Wife of DavidAArnott.com and I went to see The Muppets this weekend, and while I agree that it was pretty much as Roger Ebert put it (“funny, wickedly self-aware”), I was most struck by the relationship between the three characters at the heart of the movie and a tension completely skipped over by the trailers and the several reviews I’ve read. It amounted to a hidden plot that deserves more attention and thought, especially since it doesn’t appear the filmmakers intended to give me that particular impression. (Spoiler alert further down, after the jump…)

A few years ago, some of my college buddies got into an online argument over the relative greatness of Garden State. One friend contended the movie sharply portrayed the concerns of mid-twenties Americans at a specific historic moment, while everyone else in the conversation dismissed it as an overly pretentious, overly self-conscious, overly Natalie Portman-ized film that, worst of all, uses music to tell the audience how to feel.
While I agree Garden State is a prime offender of using music to tell the audience how to feel, if I’d been in that conversation I would have added that Portman’s character isn’t terrible so much as she’s a manic pixie dream girl. And I would have contended that even though it’s a stretch to say it’s a generational signpost, the movie does have something interesting to say about growing up and accepting responsibility in an era when children are medicated into oblivion before they can comprehend what’s happening to them.
My biggest problem with Garden State, though, and why I find it frustrating to watch through to its conclusion, is that it ends with a plot turn that subverts the movie’s clearly intended statement. So it is with 50/50.
Spoilers for multiple movies — 50/50 the only new one — after the jump.

This afternoon, I was asked which four movies I’ve seen the most times, start to finish. I thought about it for a good while, and was frightened by the most likely answers. See, I didn’t really watch television growing up because my parents didn’t — the only stuff I watched regularly on network was Simpsons reruns, San Francisco Giants games, and the nightly news (KTVU!), and didn’t care about MTV and the rest of the cable universe until I was twelve or thirteen — and that carried over to my tastes in movies.
